Can you live without money? Heidemarie Schwermer, a 69 year old German woman, is convinced you can. She gave up on money, gave it all away and claims she has never been happier in her life.
Germany – When Heidemarie’s moved to Dortmund 22 years ago she was shocked to see how many homeless people where roaming the city. She decided she wanted to do something about it and opened a swap shop with the name Give and Take. ( Gib und Nimm)
You could swap things but also skills.The shop became a phenomenon in Dortmund. The shop owner realized you could do well without buying things.
In 1996 she decided to live completely without money. She sold her apartment and decided to live like a nomad and trade her skills for food and bed. The idea was to experiment for 12 months, but she still lives without money.
She wrote two books about her experience of living without money. The money she earned with the books was spent on charity. Making several people happy instead of one, she argued.
All her possessions fit in a suitcase and a backpack. She has € 200 in savings for emergency.
