As we travel the Scottish Highlands we are surprised to see small houses now and again. Who are these people living in seclusion, we wonder? Where do they shop or hit a bar? Do they hit a bar? We find ourselves left with even more questions as we travel on.
Many people have traveled this rough country full of mountains, full of islands and full of stories. And we wanted to record these stories in print and in images. Here we present you the Scottish Highlands in the picture.
Scottish Highlands in the picture
We traveled the western Highlands and stumbled upon graveyards with Celtic tombs. Now and again we found sheep roaming the beaches. We tried to imagine the world as it was without cars. With huge castles like Eilean Donan set on a a small tidal island, where three sea lochs meet.
The castle was founded in the thirteenth century, and became a stronghold of the Mackenzie Clan. It is a beautiful castle that frequently appears in films on Scotland. Eilean Donan, means simply Island of Donnán ans is named after Donnán of Eigg, a Celtic saint martyred in 617.
Caledonian canal
Whether you sleep in a tent on the Isle of Eigg or on a boat on the Caledonian Canal, there is always a story to keep you going. Or as Maggie, who lives on the Isle of Eigg, states: “You have to be a bit daft to live here”, “Here you find no one but yourself .”
