Of course we are not surprised. As far as we are concerned Rotterdam has always been a world class European city. But now the rest of the world is starting to get that the city is hot. City planners have crowned Rotterdam European city of 2015.
Rotterdam – The city already made it to the top ten of cities you have to visit this year according to New York Times. And now the Academy of Urbanism crowned Rotterdam European city 2015. The academy is an organisation of over 500 scientists, politicians and specialists in urban and regional development.

The city was judged on seven criteria: good governance, local identity, charm. commercial success, sustainability, welfare and public transport. The post-industrial city beat off competition from Aarhus in Denmark and Turin in Italy. Marseilles held the title last year.
According to the Academy the city has a predominantly young, open, tolerant community that is embracing innovative architecture and urban design and new business models. Its strategy is to attract families and businesses to the central area with a variety of housing, excellent public transport and a lively public realm.”
