The mudflats in the picture

Even in Dutch it is a fascinating name. For a place at the end of the world, where The Netherlands tumbles into the sea.

Paesens-Moddergat – The wind is blowing hard in the fisherman’s village. The small houses are blindfolded by the dyke that separates them from the sea. It must be strange to be a fisherman living beside a sea you can’t see.

The sea has given the villagers food but it also caused hardship. Many of the villages along the northern Dutch coast have terrible stories of shipwrecks and husbands never returning. The mudflats in the picture.
